Norfolk’s coastline
used to be riddled with smuggling operations.
One coastguardsman thought he could set up a trap for the smugglers.
He went to the cliff and shone his lamp to lead the smugglers to the trap.
The shadowy shapes of the smugglers started to bob along the moonlit beach. The coastguard began the attack, but he was alone. He was mercilessly cut into pieces. “You tried to trick us!” His body parts were flung over the cliff-edge.
His cries can still be heard today.
